Corrections officer killed in shooting at Gwinnett Correctional Center

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that a prison officer was killed in the line of duty at the Gwinnett Correctional Center early on Tuesday morning.

Authorities reported a shooting at about 6:20 a.m. at the facility on Hi Hope Road, close to Swanson Drive.

Scott Riner, 59, was discovered dead in the building’s parking lot by responding authorities.

Sgt. Jennifer Richter of the Gwinnett Police Department said they now believe Riner was shot during a dispute with a suspect in the parking lot while he was on his way to work. Exactly why they opened fire is a mystery.

Richter stated, “At this time, this is a very active scene and investigation.” Our investigators are currently investigating possible leads.

The unknown suspect made a quick foot escape.

Approximately ten of Riner’s years at the prison were spent working there.

According to authorities, Riner was loved and revered by the facility’s staff and inmates alike since he was a parent and grandfather.

Gwinnett Online Campus, also located on Hi Hope Road, was temporarily closed as police investigated the shooting. No pupils should report to school today because final exams have been postponed, per school administrators. DFreeman’s Mill Elementary School and Dyler Elementary School have both been placed on a soft lockdown as police continue to look for the perpetrator.
